Dancing in
Bondage
This artistic collaboration explores the shared themes of honour, resilience and suffering for one’s art.
The piece highlights the curious relationship between a dancer and their art form- both submissive to their physical limitations and the will of a choreographer; yet able to dominate their own body and perform seemingly unnatural feats despite pain.
The work of the Shibarist demonstrates the shared experience of dominance and submission between their art forms and visualises lines to indicate control both through the external puppeteering of the dancer’s movements and internal encasement of the artist within their own body. The complexities of the ties and technical skill required speak to the shared themes of honour, perfectionism and the dedication required to excel in both artistic fields.
The work aims to celebrate the mixing of new and old art forms- highlighting their mutual complexity and the perhaps surprising level of similarity.
